About Us

The Research & Development department is indispensable in the realisation of Damen’s ambition to become the most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard in the world.

We give support to the business in the development of an innovative product portfolio and offer pro-active advice with the aim to further improve the quality and performance of the Damen products and services.

The R&D department is divided in several functions, i.e. Research, Development and Enabling Technologies. The Development teams support the business with technical consultancy and expert advice and acts as technological conscience in commercial projects. Therefore, they build on the technical knowledge developed by the five Research teams that focus on strategically relevant technology domains. Enabling Technologies facilitates R&D and stakeholders with computer science, measurement technology and data science to achieve their goals.

Damen invests substantially in its own internal R&D programs to develop the required knowledge and technology. Moreover, to enhance our knowledge, skills and capabilities beyond the state-of-the-art, we are very active in collaborative R&D projects with other industry stakeholders as well as academia and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally.

The Damen Group Expertise Centre R&D is looking for two Data Scientists. We are in search of a junior candidate and a candidate with several years of experience.

The role

The digital revolution is transforming the world. In shipping, digitalization and the use of data has a huge impact. Rapidly developing new digital technologies like computer science, measurement technology and data science are essential for DAMEN and R&D to stay ahead of the competition and create more business value. The R&D department must maturely expand during the upcoming years to secure the connection with the digital revolution on a scientific level.

The department makes theory applicable to her stakeholders by making validated knowledge available and enabling design verification by means of tools, guidelines and data. And will take a leading role on three technical knowledge pillars; informatics and computer science, measurement technology and data analytics and -science, by developing and applying state-of-the-art know-how.

As a Data Scientist you will focus on the support of R&D, The business and the Damen customers. You will participate in various projects with strong support from fellow dedicated team members.

Key Accountabilities

• Determines requirements for the application of data science methods to business questions.
• Uses advanced analytical and machine learning methods to extract value from business data.
• Builds data-driven models to generate consumer insight and help R&D address product development challenges.
• Give insights to product-teams through presentation of data-driven recommendations.
• To identify new business opportunities using data science methodologies.

Skills & experience

Since we are in search of two candidates (junior and medior), we need different levels of experience.

Junior

• Undergraduate degree in data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics or econometrics (master)
• Experience (0 -1 years) with a starting understanding of the business context to tackle the core issues and satisfy customer needs.
• Good understanding of applying data science and machine learning methods to create value out of data.
• A good understanding of the data science process. Able to work well in a team.
• Ability to distill actionable insights from analysis for a non-technical audience.
• A good working level knowledge of languages such as Python, DataBricks, Azure, R, SQL and Power BI.
• A curious attitude towards challenges. A growth mindset with the intention to develop.
  

Medior

• Undergraduate degree in data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics or econometrics (master)
• Relevant experience (3 -5 years) with understanding the business context to tackle the core issues and satisfy customer needs.
• Leadership skills to eventually grow towards a team leader role.
• Good understanding of applying data science and machine learning methods to create value out of data.
• A good understanding of the data science process. Able to work well in a team and with agile development processes.
• Ability to distill actionable insights from analysis for a non-technical audience.
• A good working level knowledge of languages such as Python, DataBricks, Azure, R, SQL and Power BI.
• A curious attitude towards challenges. A growth mindset with the intention to develop.
