Project summary:

The project seeks to examine how organizations in the healthcare industry and their stakeholders’ experience and deal with technological and institutional change. This industry is undergoing a shift towards more personal and precise care, often enabled by new devices and technologies (e.g., software). This shift brings about new uncertainty about regulatory requirements and product development processes. Sometimes, these devices and technologies may not work as planned and need to be recalled from the market. The project will look at such recalls as an empirical window to understand how people in the company (e.g., product owners) navigate the increased uncertainty, how companies and their stakeholders (e.g., patient groups, insurers, regulators) interact over these developments, and how these internal and external factors affect the type and speed of organizational learning from recalls.

The Department of Organization Studies at Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB) invites applications for a Ph.D. Candidate/Junior Lecturer in Organization Studies. As a Ph.D. Candidate/Junior Lecturer, you will have both research (50%) and teaching (50%) duties for a 6-year period.

The members of the Department of Organization Studies examine the adaptiveness of organizations from a relational perspective. Our research focuses on the interaction of organizations with their institutional environment and with other organizations within networks, and within and between organizations and organizational teams. The department has a very strong research orientation with a focus on high-quality publications in leading journals in the fields of organization and management (e.g. Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Leadership Quarterly, Research Policy, Technovation, and Journal of Management). The department’s research program is part of TSB’s Herbert Simon Research Institute (HSRI) and its cross-cutting and multidisciplinary research theme ‘Adaptive Societies, Organizations, and Workers’.

Members of the Department of Organization Studies supervise Bachelor and Master students and teach a variety of degree courses at both levels in the Organization Studies programs and in the Global Management of Social Issues programs. All programs and tracks (except for one of the bachelor programs) are taught in English. Non-Dutch-speaking candidates will be asked to teach in English only. Tasks

Research:
You will work on a Ph.D. project under the supervision of Prof. dr. Marius T.H. Meeus (promotor), dr. Ashley Metz, and dr. Nikolas Rathert (co-promotors). Your research will contribute to fundamental questions in the research on how organizations experience and deal with changes in their technological and institutional environment, drawing on organization theories such as neo-institutional theory, learning theory, and the behavioral theory of the firm. The supervisory team is actively involved in research on these and related topics, including medical device recall (Meeus & Metz), corporate efforts toward consumer safety (Rathert), and digitalization in healthcare (Metz). They have experience with publishing in top international organizations and management journals. In consultation with the supervising team, you will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the scope of this research project based on your specific research interests, skills, and career aspirations.

Teaching:
Your teaching responsibilities include giving tutorials/lectures and assisting lecturer teams in courses featured in the Bachelor’s degree programs offered by the Department of Organization Studies (e.g., BA thesis supervision and Introduction to Organization Studies), as well as in the Master’s degree programs (e.g., Societal Developments and Institutions). You will also be invited to supervise Bachelor students in writing their theses. You will have the opportunity to obtain your university teaching qualification.

The candidate is employed by Tilburg University, which is among the top Dutch employers and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment.
We offer you a full-time position, the first 12 months in the position of Ph.D. with a starting salary of € 2.960,- gross per month (PR-1). Continuation of the appointment with another 5-year fixed-term contract will be based on a performance evaluation. The starting salary as of the second year amounts to € 3.098,- gross per month (salary scale 10-1) based on a 38-hour working week.

A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually). The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies. Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary (the 30% tax regulation, which lasts for five years). The University will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.
